FULTON -- The Fulton Hornets' Emery Mayfield won the girls 5,000-meter run in the Fulton Invitational Saturday at Fulton High School.

Competing against 102 runners, Fulton's Mayfield clocked in at 20 minutes, 7.09 seconds, to win the race by 1:23.03.

"Emery Mayfield wins her 2nd meet in a row in a commanding fashion," Fulton cross country coach George Yates said. "The course was between .10 and .15 of a mile long due to the new parking lot at the high school and how the course had to be routed this year, so times do not reflect how fast the kids were running today. Her finish time was 20:07, but she would have ran closer to a 19:10 had the course been more accurate."

Mayfield led the Hornets to a fourth-place team finish out of 12 scoring teams with 132 points; North Callaway competed in the meet, but its girls team didn't have enough runners for a score.

"Our girls team continues to run strong," Yates said.

St. Louis Blue Knights -- a Christian homeschool sports association -- won the team title with 49 points.

Mackenzie McDaniel joined Mayfield as a girls medalist for Fulton, taking 16th at 23:11.17.

Pressley Schmauch medaled for the North Callaway girls, placing sixth at 22:20.38.

The Hornets also finished fourth out of 14 scoring teams in the boys 5,000 run, scoring 155 points; North Callaway didn't have enough competitors for a team score.

Kirkwood won the boys race as a team and individually. It scored 19 points as a team, and Kirkwood runner Levi Rowan topped the leaderboard at 17:03.98.

Fulton had three boys medalists: Kai Foster placed 10th out of 115 runners at 18:20.o7, Noah Thompson 13th at 18:28.08 and Noah Combs 14th at 18:29.71.

"Kai Foster, Noah Thompson and Noah Combs all ran extremely well today," Yates said. "They do a great job of pack running as a trio and continue to get stronger each week."

Tristan Young recorded North Callaway's best boys finish, taking 98th at 22:56.30. The Thunderbirds' John Higgins set a personal record time at 24:47.11 while placing 107th.

Fulton will run in the Gans Creek Classic at 8 a.m. next Saturday at Gans Creek Cross Country Course in Columbia.

North Callaway will compete in the Hermitage Invite at 9 a.m. next Saturday at Hermitage High School.
